Hello dear camping friends,
it’s us, the Schütze family from Nuremberg: father Ullrich, son Noah (12), daughter Sabrina (10), and me, Eva – wife and mother. And I am the one who will be telling you about our holiday camping at Lake Neusiedl.
Noah and Sabrina had been pestering Ullrich and me for a while with their wish for a camping holiday. My husband and I were by no means against the idea, but we hesitated at the thought of buying a motorhome or a tent. “Why don’t we rent a motorhome?” Ullrich suggested. It seemed like a good way to try out this type of holiday.
In the meantime, Uncle Ernest had heard about our plans and made us an irresistible offer we couldn’t possibly refuse: “Kids, don’t stress yourselves! I’ll gladly lend you my motorhome. And I’ve got a tent as well.” That settled it: we were going camping. Now we just had to decide where.
We are all real water lovers: our children adore surfing and kitesurfing, while Ullrich and I enjoy sailing. So having a body of water close to the campsite was an absolute must. While researching online, we soon came across the portal topcamping.at. After a bit of browsing, we ended up at camping in Burgenland by the lake. Podersdorf am Neusiedler See offers everything we were looking for in a camping holiday with water sports: sailing, surfing, kitesurfing and swimming.
There are also opportunities for Nordic walking, tennis, horse riding, cycling and hiking. Boredom is clearly a foreign word in Podersdorf. The gastronomic scene is equally impressive, including wine bars featuring well-known international wines.
We had to endure a little more anticipation, and then it was finally time to set off. The journey in our motorhome from Nuremberg to the campsite in Podersdorf am Neusiedler See went without any incidents. We all spent the first night together in the motorhome. But the very next day, the tent for the children was set up straight away – they simply thought it was much cooler to sleep outside in the tent.
We liked the campsite: grassy grounds with trees and shrubs, electricity hookups for all the designated pitches, and the site has even received the “Energy Globe Award” for its climate- and environmentally friendly measures.
We quickly settled in, got to know our camping neighbours better, and the children started making friends with each other. Or were those already the first little flirtations?
Our expectations were more than exceeded! One essential factor for us when it comes to water sports is wind. Here, a mainly onshore, strong north-westerly wind prevails – ideal for sports such as surfing, kitesurfing and sailing. Another big plus for water-loving families is the shallow depth of Lake Neusiedl, even though Noah and Sabrina are both good swimmers.
The “Nordstrand” in Podersdorf is considered the most modern surf centre in the region. It really has everything: plenty of space for surfing, a surf school, well-maintained changing facilities including hot and cold showers, a surf shop and a range of catering options.
When it comes to kitesurfing, both beginners and experts get their money’s worth. Children of Noah’s and Sabrina’s age can stand almost anywhere in the lake, which gave them a reassuring sense of safety, especially as beginners.
At the “Nordstrand” sailing school, we hired our sailboat. We were thrilled with the sailing conditions. The shallow water and steady wind created short, steep waves. With our experience, we also managed stronger winds without any problems.
When camping in Burgenland, living on nothing but self-catering would be a real shame. The regional cuisine and the excellent wines in particular are well worth discovering. Ullrich was positively in his element, tasting exquisite wines in wine bars, cellars and traditional wine taverns (Buschenschanken).
One evening at the table, Sabrina suddenly announced: “Noah is in love!”
“That’s not true at all!” Noah protested at first. Then he plucked up his courage and confidently admitted that he liked Linda, a girl his age from the kitesurfing course. “What she can already do!” he burst out enthusiastically. “She’s coming back here again next year.” Sabrina grinned. Ullrich commented, “A lot can happen in a year.
But the idea of coming back next year for camping at Lake Neusiedl appeals to me too.” We all drummed our approval on the tabletop.
We’re already looking forward to camping in Podersdorf again next year.
