A WINTER-CAMPING HOLIDAY IN CARINTHIA
Hello, this is Hubert Greindl (58) from Neuzeug in beautiful Upper Austria. I shall tell you what my wife, Elfriede (55) and I experienced during our winter-camping holiday in Carinthia. We had lots of fun and we both concluded that this would not be our last winter- camping holiday in Carinthia.
It is well known that one shouldn’t pass judgement before taking a close look at a situation. Elfriede and I have recently discovered that this also applies to winter camping. We wouldn’t have had so much fun had we given in to a negative prejudice regarding winter camping. But let’s start from the beginning. Both of us enjoy spending our holidays with our motorhome and we can look back to several memorable vacations. Initially we were sceptical about a winter-camping holiday experience. But since we are so keen to go on holiday in our motorhome, we just didn’t want to wait until summer. So, we sat down in front of our PC to search the web for some inspiration.
A PORTAL LEADS THE WAY TO A WINTER-CAMPING HOLIDAY IN CARINTHIA
As passionate campers we already knew the website topcamping.at so we started our search there and were not disappointed with the result. At this point I should add that we like to be pampered during our holidays and we are particularly interested in wellness facilities. When we saw the pictures of the campsite “Schluga Camping” in Hermagor, Carinthia, we also viewed the images of the new AlpinSPA area and were very impressed. The decision was taken – we wanted to experience a wellness-camping holiday in Carinthia, close to Lake Pressegger, and explore the “Nassfeld” skiing area, which is known far beyond the borders of Carinthia. We fixed the dates for our stay from the 13th to the 20th of January 2018, packed our things into the motorhome and off we went.
OUR ARRIVAL AT THE 5-STAR CAMPSITE SCHLUGA CAMPING IN HERMAGOR
When the family bliss is challenged because of a little argument (which eventually happens in every good marriage), I show my desire for reconciliation with a few lines from my favourite song by DJ Ötzi: “A star that bears your name ..." This (usually) achieves the desired effect. At “Schluga Camping” in Hermagor one also finds stars, in fact it is a 5-star campsite. Shortly after our arrival and a warm welcome at the front desk, we felt that these stars are well deserved. Schluga’s website already provided a host of information but the “live” update on arrival completely convinced us we had made the right decision.
Some campsites offer a reduced service programme during the winter months but not Schluga Camping. Our pitch was equipped with all the amenities that guarantee a comfortable camping holiday. And, whenever we wanted, we could just make our way to the nearby AlpinSPA wellness centre, which is much more impressive in reality than on the website pictures.
ON BOARD THE FREE SKI-BUS FOR A TOUR OF THE NASSFELD SKIING AREA
After a restful night in our “mini hotel on four wheels” and a hearty breakfast, there was nothing that could have held us back from our plan for the day. The motorhome stayed on the pitch because we were using the free ski bus service. Together with other guests we happily went to the "nice surprise" skiing area in Carinthia - including a cross-border visit to nearby Italy. The Nassfeld combines Austria’s cosy atmosphere with Italian cheerful serenity. Here, Prosecco and Bruscette are simply part of the après-ski offer.
If you consider yourself a “freerider” or “carver-crack”, you should pay attention to the “Trughöhe” and “Rudnigsattel” areas. Here you can, among other things, race down at full speed on secured slopes and measure your speed. However, we preferred to take it in a more relaxed fashion and enjoyed the comfortable lifts, the well-groomed ski runs and lots of sunshine. It is well known that the Nassfeld offers on average 100 hours more sunshine than the north side of the Alps. At the Matritsche photo-point you can take home a memorable panoramic view. And if you feel a bit peckish, there are also numerous huts where you can stop for a snack and enjoy Gailtaler bacon and cheese, Rasnici, Cevapcici, San Daniele ham, wine from Friuli to mention but a few delicacies.
WELLNESS AND CULINARY DELIGHTS ON A WINTER-CAMPING HOLIDAY IN CARINTHIA
A wellness holiday at Schluga Camping in Carinthia means, first and foremost, relaxing in the sauna and letting go of the duties of everyday life. After a session in the Finnish sauna and a short refreshment we went to the relaxation room, which offers a magnificent view of the Carnic Alps. If you want, you can also visit the salt cave and enjoy a drink at the tea bar afterwards. After completing our wellness sessions we always spent some time in the large indoor pool from where you also have a great view of the mountains. It was absolutely no surprise to us when we heard that Schluga Camping Hermagor and its amenities are among the top 10 campsites. The culinary offer is also very impressive. Normally we like to prepare our meals in our motorhome but the offer in Schluga's tavern was just too attractive. On the menu there were mouth-watering dishes such as Carinthian cheese noodles, roast venison from the Gailtal forest, goulash or a filet prepared in a pan. And the homemade desserts like "apple strudel with whipped cream" topped the whole experience.
There is another highlight we explored on our winter-camping holiday in Carinthia and which we would like to mention. It is the excellent relationship we had with the other guests who stayed there. We met very nice hard-core campers who, like us, were on tour in their motorhomes. We came to the conclusion that a winter camping holiday at Schluga Camping in Hermagor is, for us from now on, an absolute must. Bye-bye and have fun. Greetings from Hubert and his better half, Elfriede.
